Dermalogica lists Special Cleansing Gel as a soap-free foaming gel that "cleanses all skin conditions" without disturbing the skin's moisture balance. Its ingredient list opens with water, disodium laureth sulfosuccinate and sodium lauroyl sarcosinate as the cleansing agents, then quillaja saponaria bark extract, which foams naturally, lavender oil, balm mint (melissa) extract, lemon peel oil, bergamot oil and citronella-type herb oil. Further down are glycerin, cocamidopropyl betaine and sodium lauryl sulfoacetate.
It is a well-made, mid-strength gel. The sulfosuccinate is milder than a sulfate, which matters: Ananthapadmanabhan and colleagues in Dermatologic Therapy describe how harsher anionic surfactants bind skin proteins and lipids and dry the barrier, and why blended systems like this one exist. The lather is generous and the scent is why people stay loyal. The trade-off is that the scent comes from essential oils. Lavender, lemon peel, bergamot and citronella are fragrance components in their own right, and their natural constituents are the ones on allergen lists. Skin that tolerated them at 35 can react at 55.

The Genova bottle is a 50ml pump sized for once-daily use, which lasts about six to eight weeks, so the price of one bottle is really the price of a trial.
Where Genova Cleansing Gel fits for skin after 45
Genova Cleansing Gel is built for a narrower job than Dermalogica's all-rounder. It is a pH-balanced gel with no acids and no essential oils, using cocamidopropyl betaine, an olefin sulfonate and lauryl glucoside to lift oil and sunscreen, with cucumber, silk amino acids, panthenol, seaweed extract and sodium PCA to leave the skin feeling conditioned rather than tight. It is meant to be used once a day, in the evening, as the first step of a routine.
It was designed to be worked in with a silicone cleansing device, which is why it is low-foaming: a gel that froths under vibration is a mess.
