CeraVe Foaming Cleanser is in every Chemist Warehouse, Priceline and Woolworths in the country, it is fragrance-free, and it costs less than lunch. At Genova Skincare the question we hear from women over 45 is: "I bought the big bottle for the whole family. Is it right for my face now, or just for my daughter's?"
Skin after 45 does ask something different of a wash. Kendall and colleagues in Scientific Reports found post-menopausal skin holds fewer and shorter ceramides in its outer layer, which tracks with a weaker barrier, and Lephart in Clinical and Experimental Dermatology describes how falling oestrogen thins the skin and reduces its surface oil. Its ingredient list opens with water, cocamidopropyl hydroxysultaine, glycerin and sodium lauroyl sarcosinate as the cleansing agents, then niacinamide, three ceramides (NP, AP and EOP), sodium hyaluronate, cholesterol and phytosphingosine. It is fragrance-free, sulfate-free and oil-free, and it comes in 236ml and 473ml bottles plus a refill pouch.
For the money, that is a very good formula. The ceramide and cholesterol pairing is the same lipid family the skin loses after menopause, and the surfactants are the milder kind. A 236ml bottle is $20 RRP and Chemist Warehouse listed it at $11.39 on 28 September 2026, with the 473ml at $15.59 on special: between $0.03 and $0.08 per ml. Nothing in this comparison touches that.
The trade-offs come with a wash built for oily skin and the whole body. It foams a lot, it is a big bottle to keep by a basin, and the label says "normal to oily". If your cheeks have gone dry while only the nose still shines, twice a day may be one wash too many.

Prices checked 28 September 2026 from cerave.com.au, Chemist Warehouse and Priceline. CeraVe is the better buy per ml by a very wide margin, and we say so plainly. The Genova bottle is a 50ml pump sized for once-daily use, which lasts about six to eight weeks, so one bottle is really the price of a trial.
Where Genova Cleansing Gel fits for skin after 45
Genova Cleansing Gel is built for a narrower job. It is a pH-balanced gel with no acids and no essential oils, using cocamidopropyl betaine, an olefin sulfonate and lauryl glucoside to lift oil and sunscreen, with cucumber, silk amino acids, panthenol, seaweed extract and sodium PCA to leave the skin feeling conditioned rather than squeaky. It is meant to be used once a day, in the evening, as the first step of a routine.
It is low-foaming on purpose. It was designed to be worked in with a silicone cleansing device, and a gel that froths under vibration, the way CeraVe's does, makes a mess of the bristles and the basin. The honest limits: it costs about ten times more per ml than CeraVe on special, it contains fragrance (parfum), and the olefin sulfonate is a mid-strength cleansing agent rather than a cream-cleanser one. It has no ceramides; if your barrier is the problem, CeraVe's formula does more for it in the wash itself. Realistic expectations
With CeraVe, expect a thorough, comfortable, fragrance-free cleanse from day one, and on skin over 45 with dry cheeks some tightness if you use it morning and night. With Genova, expect a quieter, less foamy cleanse that leaves the skin comfortable, with less tightness within two weeks and better absorption of whatever you apply next over four to six weeks.
Neither cleanser fades pigmentation, firms anything or repairs a barrier on its own; a wash is on the skin for a minute and its whole job is to leave without a trace. How to use a foaming cleanser or a gel on skin after 45: step by step
- Patch test the new cleanser for three days behind the ear or along the jaw, especially if fragrance has bothered you before.

Neither cleanser treats redness, rosacea or hormonal acne, and on heavy mineral sunscreen days an oil or balm first cleanse still does the heavy lifting. A review by Ananthapadmanabhan and colleagues in Dermatologic Therapy notes that even mild surfactants take some lipid with them, which is why the moisturiser afterwards matters more than the wash.
