PDRN Serum After 45: Does Salmon DNA Skincare Work, or Are Peptides a Better Bet?

Quick summary

PDRN (polydeoxyribonucleotide) is made from DNA fragments, usually from salmon, and it is one of the biggest Korean skincare trends of 2026. Serums cost from under $20 to about $160 in Australia. Most of the research behind PDRN tests injections and use after clinic procedures, not everyday serums, so the evidence for rubbing it onto skin is limited.

A PDRN serum may leave skin feeling hydrated and bouncy. For fine lines after 45, peptides, retinol and niacinamide have more direct evidence in topical form.

At Genova Skincare we make a peptide serum, not a PDRN product, so we have an interest in this comparison. We have tried to keep it fair. Results vary from person to person.

Does PDRN serum work for women over 45?

If your social feeds are full of "salmon DNA" serums and glass-skin glow, you are not imagining it. Australian searches for PDRN serum have roughly doubled this year, and it is now on the shelf at Chemist Warehouse. At Genova Skincare, women over 45 are asking us whether it is worth trying.

The honest answer: it may help skin feel hydrated and look fresher, but the big claims come mostly from research on injected PDRN. How much of a topical PDRN serum gets into intact skin, and what it does once there, is not yet clear.

That does not make PDRN serums useless. It means they are a hydrating, pleasant-feeling step rather than a proven anti-wrinkle treatment.

What is PDRN, and why is it in skincare after 45?

PDRN stands for polydeoxyribonucleotide: fragments of DNA, most often taken from salmon sperm cells, although some brands now use plant-derived DNA. In clinics, PDRN and related polynucleotides have been used for years as injectables to support healing and skin quality, in treatments often called "salmon sperm facials". Rejuran, a related injectable polynucleotide, is the best-known example.

A 2025 systematic review by Lampridou and colleagues in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology looked at polynucleotides in aesthetic medicine and found encouraging but early results, mostly from injected treatments. A separate narrative review looks at PDRN for recovery after procedures such as lasers and microneedling. Neither tells us much about a serum used at home.

Many PDRN serums also contain peptides, hyaluronic acid or niacinamide. Some of the benefit people notice may come from those, not the PDRN itself.

PDRN serum vs peptide serum vs clinic treatments after 45

Prices were checked on 26 September 2026 and change often.

Option What it is Australian price Evidence in this form
Medicube PDRN Pink Peptide Serum PDRN plus peptides $31.99 at Chemist Warehouse Limited for topical PDRN
Anua PDRN Hyaluronic Acid Capsule 100 Serum PDRN plus hyaluronic acid About $28–$42 Limited for topical PDRN
Medik8 Exo-PDRN Prismatic+ PDRN plus exosome-style ingredients About $128–$160 Limited for topical PDRN
Genova Anti-Wrinkle Serum Peptide serum, no PDRN $69.95 for 50ml Small studies on its peptide type
Clinic polynucleotide injections Injected by a practitioner Varies by clinic Early but more studied

If you like the idea of PDRN, a lower-priced serum is a reasonable experiment. If your goal is softer-looking fine lines, the ingredients with more topical evidence are covered in our guide to choosing the best anti-wrinkle serum after 45.

Where Genova Anti-Wrinkle Serum fits after 45

Genova Anti-Wrinkle Serum takes the peptide route instead. Its ingredient list includes acetyl hexapeptide-8, the peptide tested in a placebo-controlled trial of 60 people by Wang and colleagues in the American Journal of Clinical Dermatology, which found it reduced the look of wrinkles around the eyes over four weeks. It also contains acetyl octapeptide-3 (SNAP-8) and shiitake mushroom extract.

That trial tested the peptide on its own, not our serum, and data on SNAP-8 comes from its supplier, so we do not quote those figures. Our serum contains fragrance, and like every cosmetic serum, it will not lift sagging skin. A review by Gorouhi and Maibach in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science sums up peptides well: promising, with room for better studies.

You can also use both. A PDRN serum for hydration and a peptide serum for fine lines can sit in the same routine, morning and night.

Realistic expectations

A PDRN serum: skin may feel more hydrated within days. A peptide serum: softer-looking fine lines usually take 8–12 weeks of twice-daily use.

Neither replaces a procedure or lifts sagging skin. Results vary from person to person.

Pros and cons of PDRN serum after 45

Pros:

  • Pleasant, hydrating textures that many people enjoy
  • Affordable entry options from under $30
  • Often paired with helpful ingredients like peptides and hyaluronic acid

Cons:

  • Most research is on injected PDRN, not serums
  • Unclear how much gets into intact skin
  • Often salmon-derived, which some people prefer to avoid
  • Premium versions cost much more with little extra evidence
Who PDRN serum suits after 45, and who it does not

It may suit you if you enjoy trying new textures, your skin feels dehydrated, and you see it as a hydrating extra rather than a fix for lines.

It may not suit you if you have a fish allergy (check the source and ask your GP), you avoid animal-derived ingredients, or you want the most proven option for fine lines.

How to add PDRN or peptides to your routine after 45: step by step

  1. Patch test for three days. Especially with a new K-beauty formula.
  2. Cleanse gently. Pat skin almost dry.
  3. Apply the thinnest layer first. Watery PDRN essences before thicker serums.
  4. Add your peptide serum. One or two drops over face and neck.
  5. Moisturise. Mature skin needs it to hold hydration.
  6. Wear SPF 50+ every morning. It protects the results you are working towards.
  7. Change one thing at a time. Otherwise you will not know what worked.

PDRN questions Australian women over 45 ask

What is PDRN serum?

A serum containing polydeoxyribonucleotide, DNA fragments usually from salmon. It is marketed for hydration, glow and skin renewal.

Is PDRN serum actually effective?

It may help hydration. Evidence for anti-ageing results comes mostly from injected PDRN, so topical claims are less certain.

Is PDRN salmon sperm?

Most PDRN is extracted from salmon sperm cells, although plant-derived versions now exist. The label or brand should say which.

Is PDRN better than peptides?

For fine lines, peptides have more direct evidence in topical form. PDRN is newer and mostly studied as an injection.

Can I use PDRN with retinol or peptides?

Generally yes. PDRN serums are usually gentle, so they layer well with peptides, and with retinol on nights your skin tolerates it.

The peptide boom after 45: our honest series

Trends are fun, and there is nothing wrong with trying one. Just keep your expectations matched to the evidence, spend where the research is strongest, and let sunscreen do its quiet work every morning.
