Bio-Oil for Stretch Marks: Does It Work After 45?
By Genova SkincareQuick summary
Bio-Oil may help stretch marks look better, but its own published research was carried out on fresh and thin marks and specifically left out the thick, old, white marks most women have by their late forties. It is a hydrating oil, it is inexpensive, and it is widely available in Australia. If your marks are years old and silvery, a dedicated cream such as the Genova Skincare Stretch Mark Cream is designed to work on texture and hydration over 8 to 12 weeks, which is a more realistic goal than fading. Neither product removes a stretch mark, and any brand telling you otherwise is selling you something. This guide compares the two honestly so you can pick the one that suits the marks you actually have.
Made in Australia
A 120ml daily cream formulated with Vanistryl peptide technology and glycerin, designed to support hydration, elasticity and the appearance of stretch marks on mature skin. Free standard delivery on Australian orders over $50, with a 30-day money-back trial.
What Bio-Oil Actually Does for Stretch Marks After 45
Bio-Oil is the default answer in Australia. It sits at the front of every chemist, it costs under twenty dollars, and almost every woman over 45 has owned a bottle at some point. At Genova Skincare we are asked about it constantly, usually by women who have been applying it faithfully for months and cannot tell whether it is doing anything.
Here is the plain version. Bio-Oil is a cosmetic oil built around vitamins A and E, several plant extracts including calendula, lavender, rosemary and chamomile, and a silicone carrier the brand calls PurCellin Oil. That carrier is what makes it spread thinly and absorb without feeling heavy.
What it does reliably is hydrate. Well-hydrated skin looks smoother and reflects light more evenly, so a mark can genuinely look less obvious while you are using it. That is a real benefit and worth having. It is not the same as changing the mark.
What the Research on Bio-Oil Covers, and What It Leaves Out for Mature Skin
This is the part almost nobody explains, and it is the reason so many women over 45 feel let down by a product that seemed well evidenced.
The most-cited study on this style of oil formulation was published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology in 2021 by Cantelli and colleagues at the University of Naples. Fifty people applied the oil twice daily for four months. The researchers reported improvement in the look of the marks, less redness, better hydration and signs of collagen remodelling on imaging.
Encouraging, until you read who was in it. Participants were aged 14 to 45, and the study included striae rubrae, the fresh red and purple marks, along with thin white marks under a millimetre wide. It deliberately excluded thick, old and deep white marks. It was also an observational study rather than a randomised controlled trial, meaning there was no comparison group.
So the evidence base sits on newer, thinner marks in a younger group. If you are 52 and your marks are silvery, wide and fifteen years old, that research was not done on you.
The prevention picture is clearer and less flattering. A Cochrane review by Brennan and colleagues pooled six trials covering 800 women and found no high-quality evidence that any topical preparation prevents stretch marks in pregnancy, including cocoa butter, olive oil and vitamin E formulations. Nothing you rub on reliably stops them forming.
Bio-Oil vs Stretch Mark Cream vs Silicone Gel: A Comparison for Skin Over 45
| Option | Best suited to | Timeline | Honest limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bio-Oil | Newer red or purple marks; general body hydration; a low-cost starting point | 3 months of twice-daily use | Its published research excluded thick, old, white marks |
| Genova Stretch Mark Cream | Mature skin where marks have widened or the surrounding skin has lost firmness | 8 to 12 weeks, twice daily | Supports appearance and hydration; does not remove a mark |
| Silicone gel | Marks that feel raised or scar-like rather than sunken | 8 to 12 weeks minimum | Evidence is stronger for scars than for striae |
| Fractional laser or microneedling | Stubborn mature marks where topicals have not been enough | Several sessions over 6 months or more | Costly, involves downtime, and still does not restore original skin |
If you want the same comparison applied to surgical and injury scars rather than striae, our guide to Bio-Oil versus silicone scar gel after 45 covers that ground.
Realistic Expectations for Stretch Marks After 45
What a good outcome looks like
Softer texture, better hydration, and less contrast between the mark and the skin around it. Give any product 8 to 12 weeks of twice-daily use before you judge it, and take a photo in the same light on day one so you have something honest to compare against. Results vary considerably between individuals, and mark age, width and depth all influence what is possible.
What Neither Option Can Do on Menopausal Skin
A stretch mark is a tear in the dermis that has healed with disorganised collagen. No cream and no oil reaches that layer to rebuild it, and no cosmetic product returns the skin to its original thickness.
Two things also change after 45 that are worth naming. Falling estrogen affects skin firmness and hydration, which can make marks you have had for decades suddenly look more obvious. And skin that has thinned generally will show any textural difference more sharply. Neither of those is a product failure, and neither is fixed by a topical.
Sun exposure increases the contrast between a pale mark and tanned skin around it, so covering the area or using SPF often does more visible good than another jar of anything.
Who Bio-Oil Suits and Who It Doesn't After 45
Bio-Oil is a reasonable choice if your marks are recent and still pink or red, you want general body hydration as well, you prefer an oil texture, or you want to spend as little as possible while you see whether anything helps.
It is probably not your best option if your marks are white, wide and years old, you dislike an oil finish under clothing, you have found it made no difference over three consistent months, or you want a product formulated specifically for skin that has changed with menopause rather than a general-purpose oil.
The Genova Stretch Mark Cream is not for you if you are expecting marks to disappear, you are not going to apply it twice a day for at least eight weeks, the skin is broken or the area is an unhealed surgical site, or you are sensitive to any listed ingredient. Patch test first. For marks alongside surgical scarring, the Skin Repair Package pairs the cream with our Silicone Scar Gel.
FAQs About Bio-Oil and Stretch Marks After 45
Does Bio-Oil work on old white stretch marks?
Its published research excluded thick, old, white marks, so there is no good evidence it does. It will hydrate the skin, which can make marks look slightly less obvious while you use it.
How long should I use Bio-Oil before deciding?
The study behind it ran for four months of twice-daily application. If you have applied it consistently for three months and see nothing, it is fair to try something else.
Is a stretch mark cream better than an oil?
Not automatically. A cream generally sits on the skin longer and carries actives an oil base cannot, but consistency matters more than format. Choose the texture you will actually use twice a day.
Can anything prevent stretch marks?
A Cochrane review of six trials and 800 women found no high-quality evidence that any topical preparation prevents them. Genetics and how fast the skin stretches matter far more than what you apply.
Do stretch marks get worse during menopause?
The marks themselves do not change, but skin firmness and hydration do, which can make existing marks more noticeable. Our guide to when stretch marks form and fade explains the stages in full.
The Honest Answer
Bio-Oil is not a bad product. It is a decent, cheap hydrating oil with a modest amount of research behind it, done mostly on younger women with newer marks. If that describes you, it is a sensible place to start.
If you are over 45 with marks you have carried for years, the useful shift is in what you are aiming for. Stop chasing fading and start working on texture, hydration and contrast, because those are the things that genuinely respond. Take the photo, give it twelve weeks, and be kind to yourself about a set of marks that most women reading this also have.
