DermaScar Classic, Plus E or Platinum: which one suits a scar after 45?
All three tubes are 15g of clear silicone gel for raised scars from surgery, injury or burns. The difference is what is added. Plus E adds vitamin E, and Platinum C&E adds a vitamin C ester and vitamin E. DermaScar is marketed by Actor Pharma, and the brand says it is made in Australia.
At Genova Skincare we hear from women over 45 who assume the dearest tube must work best on a stubborn surgical scar. That is a reasonable guess, but it is not what the evidence shows. The silicone film is what holds moisture in the scar, and that is the part the research supports.
- Classic may suit you if you want a silicone gel at the lowest price and the scar is raised, red or itchy.
- Plus E or Platinum may suit you if you like the idea of the added vitamins and the extra cost does not matter to you.
- Skip the upgrade if you are buying it only because it costs more.

Grams and millilitres are not interchangeable for silicone gel, so the per unit column is a rough guide. Even so, the answer is plain: DermaScar Classic is cheaper than ours, and two Classic tubes cost less than one of our 30ml tubes.
So why would anyone pay more for ours? Only if the details matter to you. Ours dries in about thirty seconds against DermaScar's one to two minutes, it is one larger tube rather than several small ones, and it comes with a 30 day money back trial. If price decides it, Classic is a sensible buy, and we would rather you used it every day than skipped days with ours.
DermaScar is marketed by a pharmaceutical company through pharmacies, while ours is a cosmetic silicone gel. They are not the same category of product and we are not claiming they are.
Do the added vitamins in DermaScar help mature skin after 45?
This is the question behind the price gap, and the honest answer is that the evidence is thin. A systematic review in Aesthetic Surgery Journal by Tanaydin and colleagues concluded there is not yet enough evidence that topical vitamin E alone improves how a scar looks.
One small study in Dermatologic Surgery (Baumann and Spencer, 15 people) found pure vitamin E did not improve scars, and a third of people developed a skin reaction. That study used straight vitamin E, not a silicone gel with vitamin E added, so it does not tell you how Plus E or Platinum behave. It is a good reason to patch test first. We found no independent trial on the vitamin C ester in a scar gel. For silicone itself, a Cochrane review by O'Brien and Jones found it improved scar thickness and colour, and the same authors called the evidence poor quality and highly susceptible to bias. How to use DermaScar, or any silicone gel, after 45
- Wait until the wound has fully closed. DermaScar says this is usually 10 to 14 days after surgery, but go by your own skin.
- Clean and dry the skin, then spread a pea-size amount thinly over the scar.
- Let it dry fully before clothing, sunscreen or makeup goes on.
- Apply morning and evening, every day.
- Keep going for at least two months, and longer for large or surgical scars, before you judge it.
Do not layer it over other skin treatments. Keep it away from the eyes, and stop if irritation develops.
Realistic expectations
DermaScar says it can take up to a month before you notice a change. With any silicone gel, itch and tightness often ease first, and colour and texture change slowly across 8–12 weeks of twice daily use. Research in Seminars in Plastic Surgery describes scars maturing over 12 to 18 months.
Older scars change less than fresh ones. No silicone gel removes a scar. Results vary from person to person.
What DermaScar and other silicone gels cannot do after 45

Vitamin C in a scar gel does not make it a pigmentation product. If a flat brown mark is your main concern, that is a different conversation.
Who should skip DermaScar or any silicone gel after 45

DermaScar is a silicone gel, and silicone has the best support of any non-prescription scar option, though the research is modest. It may help a raised or red scar look flatter and softer over months, and results vary.
