Facial Wrinkles

Facial Wrinkles

What are they?

Facial wrinkles are defined as the lines and creases that form in your skin and are a natural part of aging. Some wrinkles can become deep crevices or furrows and may be especially noticeable around your eyes, mouth and neck. Importantly, sun exposure is a major cause of wrinkles, especially for people with light skin. Pollutants and smoking also contribute to the skin becoming wrinkled over time.

Facial Wrinkle Prevention Tips

Here are 11 tips for protecting your skin and minimising the appearance of wrinkles:

  • Number 1: Protect your skin from the sun. Australia enjoys some of the longest daylight hours per year on the planet! Accordingly, it’s important that you limit the time you spend in the sun, especially around the midday period. Always wear protective clothing, such as wide-brimmed hats, long-sleeved shirts and sunglasses. Also, use sunscreen year-round when outdoors. This will improve control with your facial wrinkles
  • Number 2: Moisturise your skin. Dry skin shrivels plump skin cells, which can lead to premature fine lines and wrinkles. Moisturising traps moisture in your skin, which helps mask tiny lines and creases. It may take a few weeks of regular use of any skincare product before you notice any improvement in your skin
  • Number 3: Don't smoke. Even if you've smoked for years or smoke heavily, you can still improve your skin tone and texture and prevent facial wrinkles by quitting smoking
  • Number 4: Eat a healthy diet. Some evidence indicates that certain vitamins in your diet help protect your skin. Although greater study is needed on the role of nutrition, but it's a good idea to eat plenty of fruit and vegetables which contain an abundance if naturally occurring vitamins and minerals
  • Number 5: Apply self-tanner rather than get a tan. Every time you get a tan, you prematurely age your skin and create the opportunity to develop facial wrinkles. This holds true if you get a tan from the sun, a tanning bed, or other indoor tanning equipment. All of these devices emit harmful UV rays that accelerate how quickly your skin ages
  • Number 6: Avoid repetitive facial expressions. When you make a facial expression, you contract the underlying muscles. If you repeatedly contract the same muscles for many years, these lines become permanent. Importantly, wearing sunglasses can also help to reduce lines and facial wrinkles caused by squinting
  • Number 7: Drink less alcohol! Alcohol is really rough on the skin. It dehydrates the skin, and in time, ultimately damages the skin. Unfortunately, this can make us look older- so drink less alcohol!
  • Number 8: Exercise most days of the week. Many medical studies suggest that moderate exercise can improve circulation and boost the immune system. This, in turn, may give the skin a more-youthful appearance over time
  • Number 9: Cleanse your skin gently. It’s important to note that scrubbing your skin clean can also greatly irritate your skin. Crucially, irritating your skin accelerates skin aging. Accordingly, gentle washing helps to remove pollution, makeup, and other substances without irritating your skin
  • Number 10: Wash your face twice a day - and after sweating heavily. Perspiration, especially when wearing a hat or helmet, also irritates the skin, so you want to wash your skin as soon as possible after sweating
  • Number 11: Stop using skin care products that sting or burn. When your skin burns or stings, it means your skin is irritated. Irritating your skin can cause facial wrinkles and make it look older!
