Creams & Serums

The difference between Creams and Serums

What’s the difference between Creams and Serums?

Have you ever thought that creams and serums were the same thing? Perhaps you thought that creams and serums have the same effect on your skin and that they just came in differently shaped bottles. Maybe you thought that their existence was just a marketing solution, designed by companies to add on to an existing skincare product line. Critically, the truth of the matter is that creams and serums are entirely different from one another, performing 2 entirely different roles for a skincare regime.

Creams

Facial creams hydrate and protect your skin. Importantly, different creams will hydrate your skin to different levels, depending on their formulation inclusions. Creams are designed to create a protective barrier between your skin and toxins living in the outside world. Typically, creams are  made up of water and oil in their formulation. Creams are usually heavier in consistency than serums, hydrating the top layer of skin. Importantly, creams don’t usually make it past the first layer of skin.

Serums

A serum is a more concentrated product than a cream. While creams and moisturisers can contain beneficial ingredients, creams can’t be as effective as serums when it comes to treatment and correction of skin conditions. Interestingly, they are more specialized than a cream, being able to deliver super-hydrating ingredients to the skin. Serums are super-light, fast absorbing formulations, which typically do not contain oil. They are used to deliver active ingredients such as antioxidants, vitamins, and basic anti-aging elements. Applying a serum adds only 10 seconds to a skincare regime. That 10 seconds is not much when compared to the results and benefits you will get as an end result. Importantly, no serum should be found skimping on active ingredients. A good serum has optimal levels of potent ingredients and botanical extracts to tackle skin problems. A little goes a long way when it comes to serums. Think of a serum as a sheer film that covers your face while its concentrated formula works to target your skincare concerns.

How to use a serum and a cream properly

Step 1. Clean your face

Firstly, remove any residual makeup and dirt from your skin

Step 2. Apply a serum to your skin using light sweeping strokes

Secondly, given its intensive formulation, only apply a small amount of serum to the required area.

Step 3. Apply a suitable moisturising cream as the final layer to your skin

Thirdly, apply your favourite moisturising cream
