Controlling Your Cellulite

Dealing with Your Cellulite

What is Cellulite?

Before we delve into looking at cellulite and its related issues, it’s best that we understand what cellulite actually is. Cellulite is a cosmetic skin condition in which the skin on the thighs, hips, abdomen, or other parts of the body has a dimpled, lumpy appearance. Cellulite is caused by a build-up of fat underneath the skin. It's often the result of hormones, pregnancy, genetics, weight gain, poor diet, and/or an unhealthy lifestyle. While cellulite can affect men, it is far more common in women, affecting 80 to 90% of the population.

The Truth Surrounding Cellulite

Unfortunately, the truth is there is no quick fix for cellulite. The dimpled appearance of cellulite (caused by fat pushing against connective tissue in the skin) happens to everyone. Despite what social media might be trying to tell you, having cellulite is not always a reflection of your diet and/or lifestyle. “Cellulite is due to hormones, genetics and poor blood circulation,” says Marnie Nussbaum , MD, and Dermatologist in NYC, meaning it’s not necessarily something you can control. Importantly, people who are looking to get rid of their cellulite should know that there is no magic cellulite cream that’ll smooth out your skin overnight, at least not permanently.
It’s understood in the medical world that with skin sagging and weight loss, cellulite often becomes more visible. However, you can have cellulite even when you have an amazing body or tight skin. Cellulite involves fibrous connective cords that tether the skin down, creating dimples between the skin, fat, and muscle. This creates an uneven surface or dimpling and waves.

A Quick Anatomy Lesson

While fat is a factor, cellulite plagues women of all shapes and sizes. Even the thinnest of supermodels aren’t immune.  There are fibrous bands that run from the skin to your muscles; when they start to pull downward, the fat cells in between start to bulge up, creating a dimpled appearance. As the skin’s elasticity and collagen weakens, the fat can also start to protrude. Importantly, estrogen also plays a role in the development of cellulite because this hormone creates fat. This is also why cellulite most often pops up in areas of the body where we have more fat reserves, such as the hips, thighs, butt and stomach. Cellulite is a complex structural process that happens deep within the skin’s tissue, and it is difficult to treat topically.

The Use of Cellulite Cream

What cellulite cream and lotions can do is improve the look of your skin and minimise the appearance of cellulite, particularly if you use them religiously.
Over time, cellulite cream may help reduce the appearance of dimpled, lumpy skin on the thighs, hips, abdomen, buttocks, and other areas. There are a number of creams on the market that aim to minimise the appearance of cellulite. Accordingly, there are formulas that can help minimise the appearance of cellulite, using ingredients that help temporarily smooth, tighten, and firm your skin. These peptides and amino acids are great ingredients for increasing elasticity and firming the skin. Shea butter is also known for being incredibly soothing and for diminishing the appearance of stretch marks and discolouration over time. For long-term results, it is important to remain consistent in the application shea butter to your skin’s problem areas.
